Student-Built Leadership
SY-STEM is led by local student leaders. Our volunteers reach out to venues, tirelessly create curriculums and activities, and get all the supplies needed for our labs. The benefit of having our volunteers still in school is that they can see things from a learner's perspective, and teach like they want to be taught.
Limitless Creativity
We ensure that there is no one way to complete any lab. No two labs should feel the same, and neither should two students' experiences of the same lab. Each lab is crafted with creativity in mind, such that students can truly feel that their success is theirs - not the directions'.

Building Boats
"Building Boats" had our students take a deep dive into the fascinating science behind how boats work. After some intuitive demonstrations on buoyancy and density, the students got to work building their own tinfoil boats, and we concluded the lab with a sail-off!
Drag N' Drop
"Drag N' Drop" was all about air resistance. We started with a lesson on the mechanics of drag, and gave our students a task: drop a water cup without it spilling. They built a wide array of parachutes, taking advantages of principles such as surface area. Finally, they got to launch their creations outside, and test them against gravity itself.
Creatin' Catapults
Exploring the paths of projectile motion, "Creatin' Catapults" is a lab that's all in the name. Our students had to build miniature catapults, taking advantage of the elasticity of wood and rubber bands. They then used the parabolic nature of a launched projectile to hit a target with mathematical precision.
